Police investigating the disappearance of Irish woman Jill Meagher in Brunswick, Victoria, have spotted her on CCTV footage after she left the bar at which she was last seen.
Police have also raised suspicions that her handbag, found at the scene yesterday, may have been planted after her disappearance.
Meagher's handbag was discovered in a laneway along her walking route yesterday morning, after police had already searched the area.
'Gillian’s handbag was located in a laneway off Hope Street on Monday morning; police are still trying to ascertain whether the handbag was missed by police in the initial search or whether it was placed there after the initial search,' Victoria Police said in a statement.
Speaking to RTÉ radio this morning, Jim Graham of Radio Australia said 'they're adamant that it wasn't there when they did the initial search, and they do believe it was planted there.'
Messages posted to the Help Us Find Jill Meagher Facebook page by members of the public report other dangerous activity in the area. Police have told Australian media they are investigating any possible links with previous incidents.
Graham told RTÉ Radio that Melbourne, including the Brunswick suburb where Meagher disappeared, 'is a very safe place – it's as simple as that.'
A home on Lux Way was also searched by police 'as part of routine enquiries.'
Meagher was last seen leaving Bar Etiquette on Sydney Road, Brunswick, at 1.30am on Saturday.
Victoria Police are still appealing to anyone with information to come forward. Jill is described as being of a fair complexion, 165cm tall (5'4''), slim build, long curly black hair and brown eyes. When last seen, she was wearing a blue dress, black jacket, black patterned stockings and high heels.
Anyone with information is urged to call Triple Zero (000), Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
