Ireland’s met service Met Éireann may be given the power to decide the date of a public holiday should there be good weather.
According to a report in The Meteo Times, Co Clare Green Party Councillor Brian Meaney proposed a motion to allow Met Eireann to decide a date based on the likelihood of good weather.
Ennis Town Council passed the motion proposed by Councillor Meaney at the meeting last Monday.
Councillor Meaney said that he was 'surprised' initially when the motion was passed as he felt at the time that it was just a topic of discussion on a local level at a council meeting about the importance of climate change.
'Met Éireann has a very good track record in predicting five-day forecasts,' he said. 'Some people might think this is strange and unusual but we're heading into strange and unusual times.'
However, Head of Divisions at Met Éireann, Joe Bourke, said that he hadn't heard anything of this decision by Ennis Town Council.
Speaking to WorldIrish, he said the idea of being able to predict any day of good weather for a Bank Holiday (public holiday) wasn’t possible. ‘We couldn’t guarantee you that any given day would be a good one’ he said.
‘No one has made any approaches to us yet in this regard’ he said.
