Five Irish films showing at the Chicago Irish Film Festival

The Chicago Irish Film Festival is one of only a handful of Irish-themed movie events in the United States, and takes place this year from 1 – 6 March.

The entries have been selected for showing, and here are five home-grown short films from Ireland that have made the cut.

Amongst Inspiration

Amongst Inspiration: Part 4 - With Artist Paul Hughes from James Cooper on Vimeo.

This three-minute short film is an exercise in simple but effective documentary making. Inside the studio of artist Paul Hughes, it's wonderfully expressive and gives a real insight into this Irish artist.

Vanner

From Irish crowd Sidhe films, this movie follows the main character traveller Francie Vaughan, to his home after a tragic accident at a horse fair that resulted in the death of the animal. The personal impact this has on him and his new marriage is at the core of the short film.

No Justice

This award-winning crime film follows the aftermath of the death of a young man at the hands of a gang of drug dealers, and the consequences for this involved.

Barry's Bespoke Bakery

Directed by Denis McArdle, this is a classic odd couple story, set between the high-end baker Barry and his talented, but markedly different, employee. It's been very popular at Irish film festivals.

Foxy John's

This un-narrated documentary looks at the real-life oddity that is Foxy John's in Dingle, Co Kerry: part hardware store, part pub, and part music venue. The video above is from Ireland's Other Voices music show, and shows several musicians playing in the spot.
