1 February marks the feast day of St Brigid or Naomh Bríd in Irish, the patron saint of Co Kildare and one of the three patron saints of Ireland.
Making a St Brigid’s cross is one of the more traditional rituals in Ireland and celebrates the beginning of spring. The crosses are made of rushes that are pulled instead of cut.
When the cross is made, they are hung on the door and are said to protect that household from fire and evil.
