For those of you planning to spent this Valentine's night on the couch with your significant other, there's nothing more romantic than sitting down to watch some quality Irish television programming. No seriously, check this list out for proof!

Presenting: the most romantic Irish TV moments EVER.

1. The mobile phone ad

Not only does this ad serve as a warning against finding your prospective partner in a noisy bar, it also reminds us how far technology has come in just over a decade. Seriously, this ad for the mobile phone company Esat Digifone aired in 2000 and they were talking about sending AND receiving text messages as if it was some form of witchcraft.

But the point is, it is very rosemantic. Two strangers catch each other's eyes across a crowded room (never mind the fact that she has a boyfriend who may, or may not, be Peter Schmeichel). All is going swimmingly until, well, see for yourself below.

2. Breda and Jim

This story would melt the coldest of hearts. Jim and Breda appeared on the Late Late Show last Friday to discuss life, love and how they came together.

25 years ago, Jim lost his wife and proving that love can strike twice, three years later he met Breda. 22 years later and at 82 years of age, Jim finally proposed to Breda and they're hoping to get married in May. Listen to their heartwarming story below:

3. The Plonsters

Tiny, colourful, dancing Plasticine people don't exactly spring to mind when you think of love, romance and Valentine's Day, but this clip is, as the kids say, totes adorbs.

The popular segment aired in Ireland as part of the children's programme Bosco. In this particular clip, Plops and Plummy do a dance, while that prankster Plif gets up to his old tricks. When will they learn?

4. A Saturday night proposal

This, ladies and gentlemen, is true love at its purest. When your notoriously fame-hungry boyfriend proposes to you on live television after little to no encouragement by the presenter, you know you just have to accept there and then.

This moment will go down in history, forever to be held up as an example of true, unrequit.... wait, what do you mean they broke up less than a year later?

5. Father Ted's Assumptions

Father Ted meets Ballykissangel in this cracking opening to the hour-long Christmas special. Father Clifford is given the boot as brazen bar lady Assumpta finds another priest to settle down with. Or does she? Watch it here.

6. Miley and Fidelma in the hay

Believe it or not, Ireland's most famous clinch in the hay is not available online anywhere (trust us, we tried to get you a clip of it), so we had to come up with our own static (and badly photoshopped) dramatisation above.

It was a scandal that rocked a nation still getting over 'Where In the World's?' cancellation – Miley, the married main protagonist of the rural soap opera Glenroe and Fidelma, his children's babysitter, getting it on in the farmyard. It was about as racy as the show got, but has gone down in history as the most disturbingly romantic moment on Irish television. Poor Biddy.

7. The Ballad of Sharon Ni Bheolain

From: eibhleeeeeeen

We don't know how or why, but one of Ireland's best-known female newscasters has her very own tribute ballad on YouTube.

The composer cannot believe that she lost out to Anne Doyle for the title of Ireland's Sexiest Woman, and took to the interwebs to air his or her grievances. Beautiful. Speaking of Anne Doyle...

8. Brendan O'Connor shifts Anne Doyle

This was a proper full-on kiss. Unfortunately the video cuts off just before the moment of truth so we'll never know what it looked like. You're welcome.

9. Georgia Salpa loves Bernard

From: rte

One of the highlights of RTÉ's comedy series the Republic of Telly was the spoof behind-the-scenes show 'the real republic'. It gave us a glimpse into the lives of presenter Dermot and contributors Jennifer and Bernard. But most of all, it let us see Irish models acting like a crazy person.

This clip with Georgia Salpa and Bernard is a classic.

10. Martin Muff tries to get the shift

Another one from Republic of Telly, this one is slightly less romantic and definitely NSFW.

11. The bleedin' nature of love

From: rterepublicofcomedy

The Savage Eye puts Irish romance under the spotlight, with the help of a conscientious Dublin drunk (played by the great Dave McSavage). In this clip, a wise soul offers advice on the delicate nature of love to a young couple.
