We caught up with Michael Og Cusack of new, young, traditional music band Athrú from Belfast.

Have you always had a love for trad music?

Yeah, all of us have been playing not just trad but all types of music from a very young age, and our love for the music has only grown over the years.

How did you guys get together?

We're a relatively new group. We had all known each other through different music events and formed Athrú for a competition.

It must have been a busy few months for you with the launch of your EP?

Very! But we're over the moon with the reception our music has been getting and makes all the effort worth it!

What can people expect from your music?

If I had to pick one thing that I hope people would expect form us is 'Fresh'. I believe we have a unique approach to traditional music that makes it modern and stylish, yet still easy to listen to and 'jig' along.

What musicians have influenced you most?

We spend most of our spare time listening to other trad artists and researching tunes. So it's hard to focus on any particular musicians. Luckily we have had the privilege to play on the same stage as 'Beoga' and 'Rura' two bands we idolise.

Where can people go in the near future to see the band in action?

This Saturday we are in Belfast's Club Sasta supporting 'David Munnelly Trio'. We're very excited for the All Ireland Fleadh in Derry, which you will no doubt catch us playing in a few sessions! But if you watch our Facebook page we will announce any future gigs!
