Waterford city prepared a big breakfast over the weekend - and it could be a world record.

1,380 kg of porridge oats were poured into a giant dish on the city's quays and cooked for over 6 hours, in an attempt to create the world's largest bowl of porridge.

The previous world record had been set by the city of Tula in Russia - they cooked 865kg of the breakfast meal in 2011.

The official attempt in Waterford was organised as part of the city's Harvest Festival and, with over 5,500 servings that were neither too hot nor too cold, it looks like they have the title in the bag.

Local porridge producers Flahavans donated the oats for the attempt, which will be verified by Guinness World Records in the coming weeks.

Chairperson of the Harvest Festival, Anne Marie Caulfield said that she was happy that all their hard work appears to have paid off:

We are delighted with the results of the World Record attempt. It was a fantastic event to have witnessed and we are looking forward to the verification of the event from Guinness World Records. We are also delighted at the huge number of people who turned out to witness the event, it’s a great ending to a wonderful festival.

Take a look at some pictures from the day:
