We took a stroll through Dublin's streets by the Smithfield flower market this morning - here's what we saw.

Tony at Duffy's Flowers in the Smithfield market said that they'd sell anywhere from 10 to 20 times as many on Valentine's day than any other. Their order for the week was five times higher than normal.

Karenita, who was busy all morning making up bouquets from the stock as fast as they were selling, said they had run out of roses very early that morning from the wholesale business – which started at 5am.

Up on Moore street, though, there was barely a soul to be seen. The sellers there said it wouldn't get busy until 3pm and later, as men in the city make a last-minute dash.

'I'll tell you one thing,' advised one of the men at the stall, 'if you've got a woman, make sure you bring home some flowers.'

While the displays in Arnotts' store window were elaborate and well-made, but a certain Mary Street business put in plenty of effort too:

Back down at Smithfield market, Tony said he was expecting a lunchtime rush – but they'd have very little left in the afternoon.

The best advice is to pop out early. Happy Valentine's day!
