Tánaiste welcomes opening of new Aer Lingus routes to North America
The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore T.D., welcomed the confirmation by Aer Lingus today that they would be opening routes to San Francisco and Toronto out of Dublin, and Boston out of Shannon, in 2014.
‘Ireland’s Consulates General in San Francisco and Boston and our Embassy in Ottawa, in close cooperation with the IDA and Tourism Ireland, have been working hard to open key air routes into Ireland from the West Coast of the US and from Canada for some months now.
“Increased air access into Ireland from this part of the world is key if we are to meet the targets in the Government Trade Strategy of continuing to grow FDI and increasing overseas visitor numbers to 8 million by 2015.
“The flights will facilitate the tens of thousands of Irish resident on the US west coast and in Canada to travel home. The direct flights will especially benefit those travelling with young families, as well as elderly parents or grandparents looking to travel over from Ireland to visit family.
“I am delighted that Aer Lingus has confirmed that these routes will open from spring 2014. This is an example of how business and government, working together, can deliver real progress in facilitating economic growth, jobs and investment.
“Our Embassy and Consulates in the US and Canada will continue to work with Aer Lingus and other airlines to maintain and expand air access across the Atlantic.”
